In southeastern Wisconsin on the western shore of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee is about an hour north of Chicago by car. Wisconsin has cold weather, and Milwaukee is no exception. Winter temperatures of -60 F can occur with the icy wind chill off Lake Michigan's turbulent. But Milwaukeeans are a tough team to prove it, members of the Polar Bear Club challenging arctic conditions taking a swim in the lake ice each January 1. Known as the capital Global beer, Milwaukee currently has three major breweries, including Miller, Sprecher and lakefront brewery, but others, like Pabst and Schlitz, have come and gone. The success of the breweries of Milwaukee has been credited to the readiness skills and business acumen of German immigrants, many of whom were among the first settlers of the city. Brewery tours are an increasingly popular attraction and includes open bar! Fredrick Pabst Mansion, "Best Renaissance Flemish Revival Mansion in America" was built by Captain Pabst in 1892 and is a testament to the success of beer in Milwaukee. Milwaukee brewing history means good beers from around the world are available in most bars and restaurants. Milwaukee also has its share of good food. Restaurant Karl Ratzsch is the place for authentic German food and excellent and the evening of May Coerper Club is a deceptively funky (but murderer) grill. Kopp's Custard features awesome burgers and custard, whle the Mekong Café is known for its outstanding Thai and Vietnamese fare. Tourist attractions include: The Milwaukee Museum Art, Baseball Brewers, Mitchell Park Conservatory, Bucks Basketball, Milwaukee Public Museum and Planetarium, Milwaukee Country Zoo, Landing Paradise indoor water park, the Audubon Nature Sanctuary and the Museum of Harley-Davidson. The cultural scene includes the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Ballet, Florence Opera, Opera and Skylight Opera in Milwaukee. There are also many places for games, including the Sunset Theatre. The river weaves through downtown Milwaukee Milwaukee and Lake Michigan charming historic bridges and waterways throughout the downtown area. Voyager Iroquois and boat trips are popular with locals and tourists with cruises on the river, harbor, marina and lake. Happy hours are especially fun cruises, offering great views of the city. Milwaukee lakefront provides a mile-long recreation area including public McKinley Marina for docking the boat, jet ski rentals and sailing lessons. Just north, Bradford Beach is a popular attraction with picnic areas, volleyball, rollerblading, cycling, festivals and music events. Sometimes called the city of festivals, Milwaukee has Summerfest Music Festival, Fiesta Italiana, German Fest, Wisconsin State Fair, Irish Festival, African World Festival, the Summer Festival and the Festival of India facing Lake Arts. There is also the Festival Asia, Arab World Fest, Bastille Days, popular Holiday Fair, Fiesta Mexicana, frolics and numerous smaller festivals Water and neighborhood block parties. The city has a large student population with many colleges and universities including the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and the University of Marquette, with their dental and law schools. Marquette also has the Patrick and Beatrice Haggerty Museum of Art and the Al McGuire Center, home of the Golden Eagles Basketball.
