San Bernardo were in fact used as rescue dogs. They were sent out in teams. A dog to keep the person warm and another to go back and alert the rescue of the person you are. Whisky is strapped around the neck is really more of a myth. The dogs began working with mountain guides that leads people through the St. Bernard in the Swiss Alps. The monks discovered that the dogs had an incredible sense of direction in heavy snow and helped to guide the safety of the monastery. It was not until later that excursions of the dogs are only mentioned as I said earlier ….
