The Irish struggle

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I wanted to blog today to commemorate the Irish contributions to the martial arts with some links of interest, enjoy!

Of course there were Irish fighters caught, Karl Gotch I often talk about Pops Charnock, a tough Irish fighter often caught overshadowed by another wrestler of Irish decent hard Riley, Billy. Frank Holt is another fighter of the ball with an Irish lineage (FYI, also check out fighting faction Irish, someone who has done an excellent job in this area is John Hurley, check out.

This year I'm celebrating St. Patrick's Day with DVD release of the new REAL BKB: Fights of the Irish Travellers. These are the championship matches between Travelers, a group of people in the popular and romantic starter Brad Pitt movie.

The championship fight without gloves seen it happen in America, was a 75-round marathon was hard between two Americans of Irish descent, John L. Sullivan and Jake Kilrain, on July 8, 1889 in Richburg, Mississippi. Sullivan, who had mastered the bare-knuckle boxing championship for heavy a decade, won this grueling test. He is often considered first U.S. sports celebrity truth.

September 7, 1892 saw the end of the reign of Sullivan when Irish-American James J. Corbett also known as "Gentleman Jim" defeated the World Heavyweight Championship in New Orleans. The fight was to be held under the Queensbury Rules, with gloves.

The modern era was born on boxing day boxing Corbett showed that scientific could defeat the overwhelming brute force when he knocked out defending champion Sullivan in the twenty-first. Corbett successfully defended the title with a knockout Charley victory over Mitchell in the third in 1894. But three years later, Irish-American challenger Bob Fitzsimmons would be against Corbett in the 14th round to become the new World Heavyweight Champion (for details, see my book The classical pugilism and bare-knuckle boxing Companion Vol 1 and also the classic boxing without gloves Boxing Companion, Vol 2).

Jack Burke, Jim Corbett, Jake Kilrain, John L. Sullivan (here is a great piece J. scholar of BKB Elliot Gorn), Pops Charnock, Robert Fitzsimmons, Bartley Gorman, Jack Dempsey, Billy Conn, Jem Roche, Gerry Cooney, John C. Heenan, Paddy Ryan, Morrisey, John, James J. Braddock, the list of decent Irish boxers on and on … (For some biographical sketches of the great boxers, click here Irish-American).

Today is the day to go to the pub, whiskey and tip back a beer (for some of you, root beer) or Irish and give a "strong SlĂ inte '(This is the equivalent of roasted' live 'in Irish Gaelic) to these hard men of the island of Ireland!
