Is bottled water better for you? Not really, and if left too long in the bottle could be a danger to health. How much are we really paying for the bottle in terms of our environment – too.
Many people believe that bottled water is no more a proof that with enough publicity so that people can buy anything. As late as the 1970s, if someone asked to buy bottled water, would only laughed. Today consumers are spending more than $ 100 million a year on bottled water. Americans drink more than 30 billion gallons of bottled water per year. They drink more bottled water than they do coffee, milk and beer together.
Why drink water? When surveyed consumers indicated they drink bottled water because it tastes better. Many large companies bottled water products, however, is simply tap water that has been packaged. Approximately 24 percent of the bottled water market is just tap water with a luxury label. Treehugger.com says that the average cost of tap water (assuming 8 glasses of water a day) would be 0.49 years whereas the same amount of bottled water is $ 1,400.00 per year.
A former chief of the water programs of the EPA says bottled water is no safer than tap water. A strict set of rules are set by the EPA for your system water from the community. FDA has standards for bottled water too, but you will realize that bottled water companies bottled water does not make you say healthier.
Consider how many plastic water bottles to throw away a year. The Container Recycling Institute says that only 23 percent of bottles plastic were recycled in 2006, and last year, more than 144 billion water bottles were thrown in the trash. The institute reports that 85% of the bottles water end up in landfills or as litter. In addition, the bottles usually have 400 to 1,000 years to degrade. And to make matters worse, it takes more than 17 million barrels of oil each year to make all these bottles of water.
According to the NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council), studies have shown that chemicals called phthalates, which are known to disrupt testosterone and other hormones, can leach into bottled water over time. One study found that water had been stored for 10 weeks plastic and glass bottles contained phthalates, suggesting that chemicals can come from the plastic cover or line. According to the NRDC there are limits laws for the amount of phthalates in tap water, but there is no regulatory rules that limit phthalates in bottled water. The bottled water companies managed to maintain FDA to get approved standards.
So if you want to save money, your health and the environment at the same time – taking water from the tap. After a while it likely to get used to the taste and the earth will look much cleaner and greener.
