Spanish Customs – Please Do not Forget to Say Hi
Forgot to say hello?
All cultures have their peculiarities. In Spain one of the most important customs is always saying hello. Just forget to greet someone once and they will start to think "what a rude idiot" or "she is very conceited." It's that important.
I have been living in Spain for almost twenty years. My wife is Spanish, my colleagues are Spanish, my customers are Spanish and businesses are Spanish. During these years, I've learned a lot about "being Spanish.
Many Sometimes when you are dealing with someone from another country that is easy to underestimate the importance of subtle cultural differences. The things you do without even thinking about them, can be completely distraction or, worse, insulting the person in front of you. That's why I want to share with you a few simple rules that will help keep grace with the Spanish people.
- Always welcome. When two meet Spanish inevitably go through a short ritual greetings. Even if you is just passing in the corridor should be left to a quick "good morning" or "hello." Otherwise the other person really can offend.
- Do not stretch and a yawn. Spanish think stretching and yawning in public is a sign of bad manners. Although not insulted that subconsciously write that off as "one of those beasts." If you are on the table this is especially rude.
- If you are not sure you dress. Dressed in Spain are like cars in the U.S.. It is possible that the smallest unit in the utility's cheapest car on the market, but if you do using good Italian shoes or your team have been combined, they will pay attention. On the other hand, if you show up in court or an old shirt that does not matter if you're driving a Rolls.
- Not to be frank. Spanish are much more careful with his words than us. Believe me, as an America still scare people for being "too" direct and to the point. A meeting in the United States in Spain would last 15 minutes can easily go more than an hour. Everyone reaches its time repeating the same conclusions that have already been decided. This means that you need patience. You can not rush things or you are stepping on toes. Just take a wait a deep breath there.
- Sometimes it shows. Spain is a strong country. Your favorite team does not have to make a goal to boost road volume of people up. In fact, much of the time than just talk that way! Especially when something has gone wrong, you may be shocked at the fury that can show display. But do not worry. The truth is that it is on every show. I saw a manager get completely red in the face screaming, "an employee for what it's worth, and then seen drinking a beer together an hour and a half later. Just put a serious face and let the storm blow over.
If you want enter the market fast-growing Spanish-exploited, you need to know more than just speaking Spanish. You need to understand Spanish customs, the Spanish etiquette and Spanish business culture. Otherwise, you're going to be another American trying to "sell" in Spanish.
