Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Single Malt Scotch fan, but what else is not sweet?
I am new to deal with the types of spirits and I find Laphroaig bottlings (?) To be large. (I have Caol Ila Lagavulin 12 and 16 on hand as well.) I like other types of whiskey, but anything I try them out too sweet my taste. Bourbon, rye, tequila and vodka are too sweet for my taste. (Of course they could not try the best statements of each: Knob Creek Jim Beam, Tequila really cheap, and Rainn.) Ron (Appleton Special) is not to my taste. And I tried to Jager and Baileys (For some reason), but both are equally bad. Is there anything other than single malts that is not really a sweet taste that I need to try? I should note that for sweet, I do not mean sherry or vanilla or honey, or more common features of whiskey. Also, I do not do mixed drinks, I know there blended whiskeys, and I live in the U.S. in a state of control. Hopefully someone else has a similar question.
You need a good quality cognac or armagnac. Remy Martin VSOP at least. French brandy these two regions can be very hard, but as with most whiskey age (in barrel), the better. I'm in the UK, so I do not know what the cost in the U.S. would be but had a 21 year old from Lauvia Compt Armangnac for about $ 40.00
