ITK is a multiplatform application development framework, widely used for the development of image segmentation and image registration programs.
ITK was developed with funding from the National Library of Medicine (USA) as an open resource of algorithms for analyzing images of the Visible Human Project. ITK represents Insight segmentation and registration toolkit. The toolkit provides leading-edge segmentation and registration algorithms in two, three and more dimensions. The software is implemented in C + + and wrapped for Tcl, Python and Java.
Introduction
Beginning
In 1999 the U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health awarded a three-year contract to develop a record and open source segmentation toolkit, which became known as the Insight Toolkit (ITK). NLM ITK is Project Manager was Dr. Terry Yoo, who coordinated the six prime contractors that formed the Insight Software Consortium. These members of the consortium include the three trading partners GE Corporate R & D, Kitware, Inc., and Mathsoft (the name of the company is now keen), and the three partners academics from the University of North Carolina (UNC), University of Tennessee (UT), and the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). The principal investigators of these partners were respectively, with Jim Miller Bill Lorensen GE CRD, Kitware Will Schroeder, Lydia Ng Vikram Chalana in Insightful, Luis Ibanez, Stephen Aylward with the UNC (both now as Kitware), Ross Whitaker with Josh Cates at UT (both now and in Utah), and Dimitri Metaxas at UPenn. In addition, several subcontractors rounded out the consortium including Peter Raitu at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Celina and Pat Molholt Imielinska Columbia University, Jim Gee at UPenn Grasp Lab, and George Stetten at the University of Pittsburgh. Most of the first developers listed in the following, however, many developers beyond those listed here will participate in the development of CTI as the code grows and becomes accessible to the public.
Technical Details
ITK is a set of tools for open source software for recording and segmentation. Segmentation is the process of identifying and classifying data found in a digital representation of the sample. Typically, the representation of sample is an image acquired from such medical instrumentation as CT or MRI scanners. Registration is the task of aligning or developing correspondences between the data. For example, in the medical setting, CT may be aligned with an MRI to combine the information contained in both.
ITK is implemented in C + +. ITK is cross-platform, using the CMake build environment to manage the compilation process. In addition, an automatic adjustment process generates interfaces between the C + + and interpreted programming languages such as Tcl, Java and Python (using CableSwig). This allows developers to create software using a variety programming languages. C + + application ITK style is known as generic programming (ie using code templates). This means that C + + template code is very efficient, and that many software problems are discovered at compile time instead of runtime during the execution of program.
Because ITK is an open source project, developers from around the world can use, clean, maintain and extend the software. ITK uses a model of development software known as extreme programming. Extreme programming methodology collapses usual software to create a simultaneous and iterative process of design implement the release test. The main features of extreme programming are communication and testing. Communication between community members ITK is what helps manage the rapid evolution of software.
