teenage drinking – no one cares? Whose responsibility is it?
This article is my opinion – based on my years of work and my experience – As a doctor, psychiatrist, mother and grandmother. I am writing this article, about excessive levels of alcohol consumption in a growing number of teenagers.
I confess to not being in question, but only a little bewildered.
First I ask the question – "In the past 40yrs, has been a major shift in our body?
In my work keeps me abreast of new developments. But now I fear that during that time I have lost some great advance in knowledge. If not, then I am left with the question "what anyone care?" If so, who?
Let me explain.
During 35 years I have always enjoyed my work – except for a period of six months during my training for the higher grade, MRCPsych (UK), when scheduled to work for six months in a unit of alcohol. In my view, the mind is and always has been the most important organ in the body – a car that the wheel does not work is not the best vehicle for driving in difficult road of life.
But I found this the most depressing time I've found at work – for a reason. Most people who worked with were there as a result of his deliberate actions. Some people for example, those who had unresolved grief, drank initially for a reason – but alcohol does not heal anything. It merely added the problem of depression. I witnessed the slow destruction of many lives.
Some people have an inherited tendency to addiction to alcohol. This means that the person must abstain from drinking alcohol or suffer the consequences of dependency. Allergy nuts can kill – the person should not eat nuts or die. I am not indifferent – on the contrary, I have great concern for youth.
Without But let's be honest! The vast majority of young people who drink excessively do so because they want and like it, his colleagues and friends do, is "what they do." In typical adolescent, are not apparently concerned about the consequences. But surprisingly – considering the level of consumption of many or the adults around them? Who are supposed to learn?
I write not as a critical observer to tell people what to do, without knowing about the problems myself. I lived my childhood and adolescence before the asthma medication – be sure that it is not an easy option. I had a lot of ill health – spontaneously and without cause car.
I did not tell people what to do in my work – I've heard, discussed, guided and given options for an alternative way of thinking / believing / quality. They had no choice but to listen and change – or not.
The experience of working in the unit of alcohol has never left my memory. Most patients were young and healthy potentially Many were in their twenties, but were gradually eroded his health, intelligence, family life, marriages, and careers. It was sad. An 8 year old boy she came to visit her mother. Soon after her daughter had gone, his mother had no memory of having a daughter. Alcohol adversely affects short term memory term – Without that life has little meaning.
It has been long recognized in the medical world that women are much more easily damaged by alcohol men, however, young women are reportedly men drink so much if not more. Add to that are the potential adverse effects in infants born to mothers who drink.
The amounts that had been taken by patients in the room, towards the necessity of unity to help, averaged much less than young people drink alcohol in today's liberal society, and had only about 10 years of dedicated drinking just to get to their damaged state. The other factor was that these men and women had started drinking as a teenager – not much younger age groups that drink now. Today – no more volume drinking alcohol at a younger age and drinks are much higher in the unit of equivalence.
Now here is where I came
Can anyone who knows more and is smarter than me tell me where you can find the article / book / research to be read so that I know so far?
I want to see the evidence that tells me about the change that must be, in all honesty and intelligence, have taken place in the human body in the past to explain levels 30yrs incredible alcohol intake that many young people are actually allowed to drink. There is no excuse for a parent to say "he / she leaves and know what to do about a teen. Parents, no you do not mind? You have to take responsibility by giving continuous monitoring and guidance – and because good examples. The limits are necessary – but the custody, control with mutual respect can not be started in adolescence – which should start in early childhood and requires time, patience, love and limits.
(But that is another matter.)
Returning to my question about the new knowledge – let me be specific.
– Is the liver has become somewhat more resistant to damage from alcohol? NO
– Has the stomach lining is thickening or harder to prevent ulcers? NO
– You have the brain soon had a capacity to generate more memory cells to alcoholic dementia not produce? NO
– Have the brains of teenagers suddenly matured early? NO
– Have the miracles of evolution has occurred? NO
Cirrhosis of the liver was unheard of years ago in the younger age groups. Young people are dying of cirrhosis of the liver. The problem Alcohol is the damage that the end result is not immediate, but, like lung cancer from smoking, which creeps up in the background like a bad stalker waiting of the strike.
Another reason why I ask this question, new knowledge about possible and "not anyone's attention, is that the government in the United Kingdom has made it possible to drink at all hours and alcohol is now allowed to be sold at very low prices, in prominent places in supermarkets and much stronger than the equivalence of the units / Vol?
WHY – knowing the effects of alcohol, I can not find a moral reason.
Finally, I ask 'is anyone else you mind "because the parents are actually allowing the consumption in the payment by alcohol – as most of 11-15 years of age or younger still do not earn money. Some parents take the attitude "They'll grow out of it" or "sensitive." Do not rely on the erroneous belief.
damage alcohol – in the liver and brain – is irreversible.
Adolescents are maturing years. The brain is not mature. If health is ruined at this stage, then all future adult life is in disrepair. In my opinion, parents remain responsible for the health and welfare of their children adolescents. Who else has the authority and responsibility? Oh – of course, schools, teachers and the State! Sorry, I forgot – how silly of me.
Where is the breakthrough that I can not find? No one.
Those six months working in the unit of alcohol side has taught me of human nature, which, when accessed, strengthened and fueled by alcohol, not value life, family, capacity, friend, or child – a team that had the way to stop the destruction through initial and transient false joviality and camaraderie through depression to decay and neglect.
That side is allowed and often encouraged to be even stronger in adolescents – by denial of responsibility and control by parents, and a government that allows the alcohol to be freely available and more powerful. The fabric of society are undermined by antisocial behavior fueled by alcohol, and harm the very people that society is based on the future. In my opinion, whatever the state government or the parents say – those that allow teenagers to drink to excess NO CARE.
Teens can not experience hangovers, and direct instruction education may have little leverage against the combined pressure and lack of confidence. Teens tend to want other teens to "do what I do" or "I want to do what you do" – feel safer with a "solidarity" with other of the same age. To be accepted and 'part of the gang "is more important to many that" what can happen. "
I have written 'Choice Teens book 'poetry specifically for young people – of metaphors and rhyming verse in an attempt to strengthen the adolescent psyche to promote health and discussion – in a gentle, non-directive. Some poems are read by me on my website of the school.
The books are deliberately cheap – only cost a few glasses of wine or beer – and can be purchased through the website shown in the resource box.
Parents, wake up, take measures before it is too late – or their children will die before you. If you have not experienced pain in his life but, surely, if you stop drinking to excess. As a psychiatrist I can say that the loss of a child is the worst pain you can face.
There will be no resurrection or adulthood for teenagers, whose brain or liver is irreversibly damaged.
For those with younger children, build your relationship NOW for taking the time and effort with them and to give a good example for them.
