– Search open water areas and listen to avoid cracks or booms that may indicate unsafe ice thickness.
– If you go on the ice in a group, always stay at least 10 feet away so as not to put too much weight on a point of ice.
Kokanee salmon ice fishing is best done in the coldest part of winter when the great lakes freeze over. They will be easier to catch, near the center of the lake where you can reach the deepest parts of the lake. You probably have the best luck in Alaska and northwestern Canada, but many areas in the 48 area is also good for Kokanee salmon ice fishing. Lake Tahoe in Nevada is a very popular because it is a freshwater lake depth, where abundant Kokanee salmon because they have plenty of space for breeding.
