A toast to Dr. P

By James F. Cotter

One of my favorite teachers in college, and one of my first, was Dr. William Pixton. I am interested in part and only partly because he had done his thesis on my favorite poet, Shelley. The more I learned about Pixton, on the political differences found most fascinating. And while serious, we got on very well.

Pixton was a parody of the conservative, or as a partner class on one occasion, "He is so straight that you are away." He wore glasses, his hair was short and always contaminated by hair tonic, dressed conservatively, except for heavy bag he always carried, and one thing that sometimes his waist, possibly a money belt, I was not sure. His pants were wide forever. He was thirty-four when I met him, I think, but looked ten years older.

It could be fun sometimes. A rough humor, was. He had been an evangelical atheist, said: "Go to people knocking on the head and saying, 'How can you believe that nonsense!" But then he crashed his plane was fired from the cockpit and flew headlong into a tree. He was saved by his helmet. The tree was destroyed, and so was the plane. Then he got religion.

Fortunately, I made extensive notes in all my classes and my class notes and some others have survived all these years. I present here some of the appointments Pixton classroom:

"I'm terrified by the technological advances in the twentieth century. I just I want to be back soon in the Middle Ages. "(I wrote:" It's logical. Their policy is ").

"Loch Ness is the most of sinister've ever seen in your life. You can not see half inch below the surface. surrounding trees and gnarled fingers. If I were a monster that would go there now. "

"The Western world's spiritual ties depended on the wishes of a man."

In the beer: "If enough good for the King Alfred, is good enough for me. If King Alfred drank beer, I can "

"The devil wears a false face. You know the actor Vincent Price, right? Well, that's what Satan looks like. "

Pixton I have not seen in years, but never forget, I do not want. A toast to you, Dr. P, wherever you are. If he were here now, I would like to buy a beer. Here's to you. And behold, the King Alfred. And the old days. And here's to Shelley. And here's the good old English language. Hey, and French, for the case. And here is Salma Hayek. And here that, ahh, any number of things, really ….

Ahem. In short, Dr. P, you are a good fellow, and I thank him for it.
