Santa Monica Hippodrome (carousel) is a National Historic Landmark. Sits in the Santa Monica Pier, which was built in 1909. The ballroom at the La Monica Pier was once the largest ballroom in the U.S., and the source of many issues year-end national network. The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium was an important music venue for several decades and hosted the Academy Awards in the 1960s. McCabe's Guitar Shop is still original acoustic performance space, and point of sale. Bergamot Station is a city-owned art gallery complex that includes the Santa Monica Museum of Art The city is also home to Santa Monica Heritage Museum.
Santa Monica is home to the Third Street Promenade, a major outdoor stores pedestrian-oriented district that stretches for three blocks between Wilshire Blvd. and Broadway (not the same Broadway, in Central and South Los Angeles). Third Street has been closed three blocks and stretch becomes a pedestrian, only to allow people to congregate, shop and enjoy street performers. Santa Monica Place, the shopping center under roof designed by Frank Gehry, is located just to the south. It was closed for remodeling, and is expected to reopen in the spring of 2010 as a modern shopping complex, entertainment, more outdoor space.
Hosts the annual Santa Monica Film Festival Santa Monica.
The theater's oldest cinema in the city is the Majestic. Also known as the Mayfair Theatre, the theater which opened in 1912 has been closed since the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The Aero Theater (now operated by the American Cinematheque) and the Criterion Theater were built in the 1930s and show movies. El Paseo de Santa Monica only supports more than a dozen screens.
Palisades Park extends along the cliffs overlooking the Pacific crumbles and is a walking area preferred to see the ocean. It has a camera obscura. For 48 years the churches local Police Association assembled a 12-picture story of Christmas in Palisades Park. The sheds were open to the street, protected by cyclone mesh fences (For years there was no fencing because vandalism was not yet a big problem). Inside were dioramas of the Holy Family from store mannequins; critics argued that many of them do not resemble real people, were damaged or inadequate. In 2001 the city decided to temporarily halt the practice of allow private groups to place displays in city parks, but in 2004 the Christmas displays returned.
The Santa Monica Steps, a long, steep staircase that leads from San Vicente North down Santa Monica Canyon, is a popular place for outdoor workouts totally natural. Some area residents have complained that the stairs have become very popular and attract many sportsmen in the wealthy neighborhood of multimillion-dollar properties.
The natives and tourists have enjoyed the Santa Monica Rugby Club since 1972. The club has been very successful since its inception, most recently, winning the national championships back-to-back in 2005 and 2006. Santa Monica defeated the Boston Irish Wolfhounds 57-19 in the Division 1 final, convincingly claiming its second consecutive American title on June 4, 2006, in San Diego. They offer men, women and children's programs successful. The club recently joined the Rugby Super League.
Every fall the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce of drivers "Taste of Santa Monica in Santa Monica Pier. Visitors can sample food and beverages from restaurants in Santa Monica. Other annual events include Business and Consumer Expo, Sustainable Quality Awards, Santa Monica Cares Health and Wellness Festival, and the State of the City.

Primary and secondary
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District provides public education at primary and secondary. Private schools in the city include the Crossroads School, New Roads School, Concord High School Pacifica Christian High, St. Anne Catholic School, the Academy Christian Lighthouse Santa Monica Catholic High School. Notables include primary schools Carlthorp School and Santa Monica Montessori School.
Post-secondary
Santa Monica College is a community college founded in 1929. Many SMC graduates transfer to the University of California. It occupies 35 acres (14 hectares) and enrolls in 30,000 students per year. Frederick S. Pardee RAND Graduate School, associated with the RAND Corporation, is the largest U.S. producer of public policy Ph.D. The Art Institute of California in Los Angeles also found in Santa Monica near Santa Monica Airport, although many are fooled to believe that the institute is in the city of Los Angeles because of his name.
Universities and colleges within a radius of 15 miles (24 km) from Santa Monica include Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Los Angeles Valley College University, Loyola Marymount, Mount St. Mary's College, Pepperdine University, California State University, Northridge, State University of California, Los Angeles, UCLA, USC, West Los Angeles College and West Valley Occupational Center.
Transport
The Santa Monica Freeway (Interstate 10) begins in Santa Monica, near the Pacific Ocean and heads east. The Santa Monica Freeway between Santa Monica and downtown Los Angeles has the distinction of being one of the busiest highways in North America. After passing through Los Angeles County, I-10 crosses seven states, ending Jacksonville, Florida. In Santa Monica, is a road sign designating this route as the Christopher Columbus Transcontinental Highway. State Route 2 (Santa Monica Boulevard) begins in Santa Monica, just grazing on State Route 1 Lincoln Boulevard, and continues northeast across Los Angeles County, through Angeles National Forest, crossing the San Gabriel Mountains and Angeles Crest Highway, ending in Wrightwood. Santa Monica is also the west (Pacific) term of historic U.S. Route 66. Near the eastern border of Santa Monica, Sepulveda Boulevard stretches from Long Beach in the south, the north end of San Fernando Valley. Just east of Santa Monica is Interstate 405, the San Diego Freeway, a major north-south route in the County of Los Angeles and Orange County, California.
In addition, City of Santa Monica has bought the first ZeroTruck all-electric medium-duty trucks. The vehicle is equipped with a non-profit Scelzi, is based on the Isuzu N-Series chassis, advanced 100 PowerPhase UQM electric motor and power is the only U.S. built truck offered for sale in United States in 2009.
Bus
The city of Santa Monica runs its own bus service, the Big Blue Bus, which also serves much the West Los Angeles and the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). A Big Blue Bus was high on speed action movie.
The city of Santa Monica is also served by the county Greater Los Angeles bus lines Transportation Authority. Metro also complements Big Blue service, as when Big Blue routes are not operating overnight, Metro buses make many stops Big Blue Bus, MTA also stops. Currently no underground train service, but are working to Santa Monica light rail in the shape of the line of the show. Since the mid-1980s, various proposals have been made to extend the Purple Line subway to Santa Monica on Wilshire Boulevard. Medical services
Two major hospitals are within the limits of the city of Santa Monica, Santa Monica UCLA Hospital and the Hospital of San Juan. There are five fire stations, medical and fire response units-Fire 121-125. Santa Monica Fire Department used to be sent from within of the city. However, SMFD now incorporated into the Office of the Operation Command (TOC) system of the city of Los Angeles Fire Department. ambulance transport is provided by Gerber ambulance services.

Santa Monica is located at North 341'19 "11828'53" West (34.022059, -118.481336).
The city is based on a nearly flat slope that angles down towards Ocean Avenue and south. High bluffs separate the north side of the city beaches.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 41.2 km (15.9 miles), 21.4 km (8.3 miles) of land. Its boundaries extend three nautical miles (5.6 km) to the sea, and thus 19.8 km (7.7 miles) of it is water for a total area is 48.08% water.

Santa Monica enjoys an average of 310 days of sunshine year. Because of its location, nestled in the vast and open Santa Monica Bay, morning fog is a common phenomenon in May, June and early July (caused by changes in ocean temperature and currents). The premises have special terminology for this phenomenon: the "May Gray" and "June Gloom." Overcast skies are common for June mornings, but usually the strong sun burns the fog around noon. However, sometimes will remain cloudy and cool throughout the day in June, although as in other parts of Los Angeles area to enjoy sunny skies and warmer temperatures. As a general rule, the temperature of the beach is 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit (3 to 5.5 degrees Celsius) cooler than the Earth. A typical spring day (mid April) is sunny, pleasant and about 68 F (20 C). In the summer, which extends from De May to late October, temperatures can reach mid-80s Fahrenheit (30 C) on the beach. The average temperature in August is 71 F (21 C). September is the month warmest year in Santa Monica, with an average of 73.2 F (22 C). It is also in September that high temperature records tend to be broken. In early September 2004, 92 F (33 C) to 98 F (33 C to 37 C) were recorded.
In early November, it is 68 F (20 C). In late January, temperatures are around 63 F (17 C). It is winter, however, when the hot, dry Santa Ana winds are the most common. In mid-December 2004, the temperature rose to 84 F (28 C) in Santa Monica, a few lines for one day, completely sunny skies. In contrast, temperatures above 10 degrees below the average are rare.
The rainy season is from late October to late March. Winter storms usually approach from the northwest and pass quickly through the Southland. There is very little rainfall during the rest of the year. Total annual rainfall is unpredictable and occasionally wet years followed by drought.
Santa Monica usually enjoys a cool breeze blowing from the ocean, keeping the air fresh and clean. Therefore, pollution is a minor problem in Santa Monica than elsewhere around Los Angeles. However, in the autumn months from September to November, the Santa Ana winds often blow from the east, bringing air smog beaches.

The city is known as a leading sustainable cities throughout the U.S.. [Who?] Three four of the city's public works vehicles run on alternative fuel, making it one of the largest fleets of this kind in the country. All public buildings the use of renewable energy. In the past 15 years, the city has reduced emissions of greenhouse gases by nearly 10 percent, a feat in car-crazy Southern California. City officials and residents have made the ongoing cleanup of Santa Monica Bay a priority for an urban runoff facility catches 3.5 million gallons of water each week that would otherwise flow into the bay. According to the 2000 census, there are 84 084 of people, 44,497 households, and 16,775 families residing in the city. The population density is 3930.4 / km (10,178.7 / mi). There are 47,863 housing units at an average density of 2237.3 / km (5794.0 / ml). The racial makeup of the city is 78.29% White, 7.25% Asian, 3.78% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.10% Pacific Islander Pacific, 5.97% from other races, and 4.13% from two or more races. 13.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 44 497 households out of which 15.8% have children under the age of 18 years, 27.5% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 62.3% were non-families. 51.2% of households made up of individuals and 10.6% had someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.83 and the average size family is 2.80.
The city of Santa Monica is consistently among the most educated cities in the United States, measured by the percentage of residents with degrees graduate.
The population is diverse in age, with 14.6% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 40.1% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% 65 years or more. The average age is 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.3 males.
Under an estimate of 2007, the median income for a household in the city is $ 71,796, and the median income for a family is $ 100,657. Males have a median income of $ 55,689 against $ 42,948 for females. The per capita income for the city is $ 42,874. 10.4% of the population and 5.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.9% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of over 65s living below the poverty line.
Government and infrastructure
City Council Santa Monica, a Council-Manager form of government, with seven Council members elected at-large team is the current city government. Mayor Ken Genser died on January 9, 2010, and Pam O'Connor assumed the title of Mayor Pro Tem. In the state Legislature Santa Monica is located in the District 23 California State Senate represented by Democrat Fran Pavley, and at the 41st California State Assembly District in the district, represented by Democrat Julia Brownley. Federal Government, Santa Monica is in 30th Congressional District of California, which has a Cook PVI of D +20 and is represented by Democrat Henry Waxman.

Crime
In 2006, crime in Santa Monica affected 4.41% of the population, slightly below the national average crime rate that year of 4.48%. Most this was property crime, affecting 3.74% of the population of Santa Monica in 2006, and was higher than the rates for the County of Los Angeles (2.76%) and California (3.17%), but lower than the national average (3.91%). These per capita crime rates are calculated based on the total population of Santa Monica in time of about 85,000. However, the Santa Monica Police Department has suggested that the actual crime rate per capita is much lower, as tourists, workers, and van to the beach during the day can increase the population of the city of between 250,000 and 450,000 people.
Violent crime affected 0.67% of the population of Santa Monica in 2006, according to the County of Los Angeles (0.65%), but higher than the average California (0.53%) and nation (0.55%).
Hate Crime has typically been minimal in Santa Monica, with only one incident reported in 2007. However, the city experienced an increase in anti-Islamic hate crime In 2001, after the attacks of 11 September. Hate crime levels returned to their lows of 2000 levels by 2002.
In 2006, Santa Monica voters passed "Measure Y" with a 65% majority, which moved the issuance of citations for smoking pot at the bottom of the list of police priorities. A study 2009 by the Santa Monica Daily Press revealed that since the law took effect in 2007, the Santa Monica Police "had not issued any subpoenas for violations related to the adult, personal use of marijuana in private homes. "
Gang activity
While gentrification has become much of the city, parts of Santa Monica gang activity experience. The city estimates that fewer than 50 gang members in Santa Monica, although some of community organizers dispute this claim. Gang activity has been prevalent for decades in the Pico neighborhood, particularly the area that runs roughly from 14th Street east of Cloverfield, and between Pico Boulevard and Colorado Avenue. This war has sporadically spilled into the halls of Santa Monica High School and life impacts everyday students at Olympic High School (corner of Ocean Park Blvd and Lincoln Blvd.) These various feuds have claimed dozens of lives in more than two decades.
Culver / Pico feud
One of the most violent fighting was between Santa Monica 13 Latino gangs and the rival Culver City 13 gang. In 1998, five dead shooting occurred in a period of two weeks between these two bands.
In October 1998, claimed Culver City 13 gang member Omar Sevilla, 21, of Culver City was killed. A couple of hours after the shooting of Sevilla, German tourist Horst Fietze was killed. Several days later Juan Martin Campos, 23 years old a businessman from the city of Santa Monica and the former gang member was shot dead. Police believe it was a retaliatory killing in response to the death of Omar Sevilla. Less twenty-four hours later, Javier Cruz was wounded outside his home on 17 and Michigan, a violence riddled pocket of the Pico area.
In 2006, there was a double homicide Westside Clothing store on Lincoln Boulevard. During the incident, Culver City gang members David "Puppet" Robles and Jesse "Psycho" came into the store Garcia masked and began opening fire, killing Anthony and Michael Juarez. Then he ran to a getaway vehicle driven by a third Culver City gang member, which is now also in custody. The clothing store was believed to block local gang members in Santa Monica. The dead included two men from the north California, who was just visiting the store owner, his cousin, to see if they could open a similar store in your area. Police say the incident was in retaliation for a shooting committed by the Santa Monica group 13 days before the Juarez brothers were gunned down.
Apart from rivalry with the Culver City gang, Pico Black and Latino gang members also feud with the Venice and West Los Angeles gangs. The main rivals in these regions include Venice 13, Venice gang Crips coastline located in the Oakwood area of Venice, CA. The SOTEL 13 gang located in West Los Angeles has long been the main rival gangs in Santa Monica America.

Film and TV
Hundreds of movies have been filmed or set in part within the city of Santa Monica. One of the oldest exterior shots in Santa Monica is married grudge Buster Keaton (1929) showing much of 2nd Street. The comedy is a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) includes several scenes shot in Santa Monica, including those along California Street slope, which led to the treasury of the film, "The Big W". The Sylvester Stallone movie Rocky III (1982) shows Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed in training to fight Clubber Lang running on the beach in Santa Monica, and Demolition Stallone Man (1993) includes the configuration of Santa Monica. Somebody Love indie Henry Jaglom (1987), the last film in which Orson Welles appeared takes place in the venerable Santa Monica Theater Mayfair. Heathers (1989) uses John Adams Middle School Santa Monica for many exterior shots. The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996) takes place entirely in Santa Monica, including the Palisades Park area, and has a similar KCRW radio station at Santa Monica College. 17 Again (2009) was shot in Samo Alto. Other films include exterior shots show important Santa Monica Fletch (1985), Get Shorty (1995) and Ocean's Eleven (2001).
The documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys (2001) and the related drama Lords of Dogtown (2005) are as much about culture influential skate Santa Monica Ocean Park neighborhood 70 years.
Santa Monica Pier is shown in many films, including They Shoot Horses, Right? (1969), The Sting (1973), "Ruthless People (1986), Beverly Hills Cop III (1994), a clean slate (1994), Forrest Gump (1994), Internet (1995) Love Stinks (1999), Cellular (2004) and Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009).
A number of television series have been established in Santa Monica, including guards from the beach, Three's Company, Pacific Blue, and Private Practice. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the outside main body of the town of Sunnydale, including the sign of infamous sun ", was located in Santa Monica on a lot on Olympic Boulevard.

The band "Linkin Park" was named after Lincoln Park in Santa Monica.
The modern rock band Theory of a Deadman's song titled "Santa Monica" is a first-person account about a girl leaving her partner to start a new life in Santa Monica.
The band Everclear released a song entitled "Santa Monica "in 1995, which became his first hit mainstream.
The band Savage Garden also released a song entitled "Santa Monica" from their album # 3 USA Savage Garden (1997).
