Where backpack within South East Asia

Thailand

Thailand is usually the best place to start for the first time traveler independent. It is very easy to move and there are always plenty of other backpackers about to chat and pass the time.

Thailand is a mix of forest north of Walking and some of the world's best beaches in the south.

Bangkok is a bustling city criss crossed with canals and rivers. The skyline is one of the skyscrapers, shopping malls and international hotel chains, but on the banks of the canal and side streets of the city beside the traditional Thai life is clearly visible. The business center of the city is easy to navigate using the underground cable car, but the main tourist areas along the road are less well-San Koh supplied and Tuk Tuks are the main mode of transport. Negotiate hard with your tuk tuk – a taxi is always cheaper and has the advantage of air conditioning but be sure to agree that you are charged according to meters instead of agreeing a fixed price. Taxis only take you at an agreed price after 3pm from this point of time peak and are very likely to spend hours with you in a jam!

Its main point of call is the way to San Koh as it is where all the hostels and guest houses meet. This is a long street where there is a market every night and plenty of bars and restaurants to choose up to a McDonalds and Burger King for those who want something else in the house. For the best food when you go to street vendors. You will receive some of the best Pad Thai you've ever eaten for about 20 baht.

Southern Islands

Most people come to Thailand for the beaches and diving. The main islands in the South are:

Koh Tao

A backpacker island where everybody comes to diving and especially to learn how to dive. There are some fine beaches here and also a good nightlife.

Koh Pan gan

This is part of the island of Thailand, where the famous Full Moon party is held every month. That if you have not heard is a wild party on a beach that attracts at least 10,000 people each month to get as much shit as possible. Get here a few days during the peak months if you want to find accommodation though.

Koh Samui and Phuket

These islands are full of tourists on holiday in his annual package holiday for two weeks in the sun. I would strongly suggest avoiding these two islands.

Koh Phi Phi

This island was severely damaged by the tsunami and have seen the before and after me is truly remarkable is how quickly has to return to their feet. There is one main area / city where it remains the world but still is not big enough for everyone to be on top of another. The beach is like a postcard or you can take a boat to the lagoon where the Leo Dicapro movie "The Beach" was filmed and cold that day.

Vietnam

Vietnam was devastated by the war but now is a great place to visit. I suggest starting your trip out of Hanoi and working your way down the country.

Hanoi

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and is a great introduction into the Vietnamese way of life. The city is always lively and carful when crossing the road as Bikes do not stop.

The city center is about Hoan Kiem lake is just the old town which is the main area of budget hostels and guesthouses. Hanoi is a great place to go for a walk alone. Each street has its own trade and shops can only sell the products to do with trade as that streets only end up having to sell shoes or kitchen utensils. It is rare to see, but that's the way they do.

If you are tired and hot when walking you can always make a stop for some Bia Hoi. You will see the entire city lot of people sitting on small plastic chairs in the street, this is where they sell the Bia Hoi. This is officially the cheapest beer in the world project. A glass should set you back about 10p/20 Cents.

Ha Long Bay

This is north of Hanoi and is available in all travel agencies in the city either as a trip overnight. This is a must for anyone in the area as a site UNESCO's heritage and is for good reason.

The bay is approximately 2,000 limestone islands with caves to explore and a few lakes canoeing in. When you leave out the bay in a traditional junk boat where you have your own room and dinner and breakfast.

Hoi An

Hoi An is located on the coast and actually has a pretty decent beach. It is also the perfect place for perfectly tailored attire. There are too many to mention here tailors the road main more or less consistent one. You can get almost anything done here all you need do is take a picture of the item you want and they will for you. A good quality suit costs about $ 50 – $ 100.

Nha Trang

It is a beach hotel just over half the country. This city is highly developed, with good long beach stretches all along it. Not much to do here, but culturally is a good place to relax after more than one few long bus rides to get here. If you choose to simply relax on the beach all day the only time you need to move from it is to go to the bathroom, there are so many vendors selling almost anything you need from books, drink at a BBQ of fresh fish. Nightlife is great here with a couple the main place to go. These are Why not Bar and Sailing Club is located right on the beach but more expensive for it.

Ho Chi Min City (Saigon)

This Vietnam is the one you see in the movies. Streets crowded with so many bikes, the smoke that hampers breathing and general mayhem. There is a quite a few museums here to which were mainly to do with war, but they are all worth visiting and even the strongest man in tears photos suffering they endured.

From here, take a trip to Cu Chi tunnels in the north was a series of small tunnels that are used to combat south. You can download some of these tunnels, but be warned they are very small and it is better not to do in a hangover as I did. Here, too, may be dismissed an arsenal of automatic weapons and rifles, which is not as cheap as you pay per bale.

Cambodia

Cambodia has had a past very nasty with his dictator Pol Pot, but is recovering perhaps not as fast as its neighbors, "but it's getting there." Cambodia is surrounded by Vietnam, Thailand and Laos, the Mekong has passed through the country in Laos.

Phnom Penh

It is a typical Asian city in the Capitol, is not much to do but to achieve is a great experience if you come from Vietnam. From Saigon you can get a boat to take you two days to get here, but you see some real Vietnam and Cambodia on the road.

The two main places to visit in and around Phnom Penh are the concentration camps where about 200,000 people were executed during 1975-1979, when the Khmer Rouge reign. You can see millions of bones and thousands of skulls have been recovered from the wells.

Also go to the S-21 that used be a high school that was converted into a prison during the Khmer Rouge also where up to 20,000 people imprisoned and tortured and killed several times that.

Two to three times a day show a film that goes into detail about what happened in prison interviews with survivors and prison guards.

Sihanoukville

It is a beach resort of 3-4 hours by bus outside of Phnom Penh and has a pretty decent beach all the time has hostels / boarding houses, restaurants and bars where you can chat with new friends and enjoy a cold beer. You can dive here, but I do not waste your money and the visibility is very poor and have no reefs much marine life.

Siem Reap / Angkor Wat

Siem Reap is the nearest town to the temples of Angkor Wat. The city itself has little to offer beyond of a market in the center of the city where you can get some new clothes and souvenirs. Every night, most people head to the aptly named Bar Street to meet and hang out with friends.

The Angkor temples are spectacular and are very worth the visit. You get a choice between a 1 or 3 days each passing day. It is recommended to go for the sunrise over Angkor Wat as this is quite surprising, but it can get very busy.

There are many temples to see that here most still in perfect condition. Although my favorite is the one that has been taken over by the jungle and most are ruins.

You can hire a tuk tuk driver to go around which is recommended if you make a day trip or simply rent a bike and go around the rhythm that you own.

Laos

Laos is landlocked and borders Burma, China, Vietnam, Thailand and Vietnam. Laos was involved in the Vietnam War due to its proximity to the country and is one of the most under developed countries in the region.

Vang Vieng

The city with no memory to go out. This place is just a big drunken fog. You get a tractor inner tube and float down a river and a stop at bars along the route and get free shots of Lao Lao whiskey and then cubes drink more whiskey and coke Lao Lao until 6 pm, then when you think you have enough to go to an island that is right bars (smile is the best) to middnight when the curfew kicks in. I love this place: D

Try rope swings in each of the bars. The first bar has the most bars can claim otherwise.

Luang Prabang

Very nice city and is very quiet compared to Vang Vieng. The night market seems to run forever with a lot of sweets. Also if you go here you to go bowling one night after 11pm – you'll see what I mean.
