Does Beer Freeze

does beer freeze
Does anyone freeze beer to get drunk quickly?

I used to have a roommate who used to drink cheap 3-4% alcohol beer all the time and so I didn’t think he was too far gone as an alcoholic can get. I noticed he would always forget about beer he’d put to chill in the freezer so one day I took it out and put it in the cooler instead and he went mad at me. Told me to leave his property alone. The penny dropped that he is freezing it deliberately to extract the alcohol. Does anyone else do this? Does it work? I lived with this roommate for 6 months without noticing the state he could get himself in!
The amount of people that dont think this works is shocking. Water freezes at 0degC. Ethanol freezes at -114degC. Your freezer is about -30degC so it will seperate the water. jeez.

Your friend is full of crap. What he probably heard was the process of making ice beer… but didn’t quite understand it.

Ice beer is made by lower in the temperature of the beer until the water freezes but not the alcohol content. The water is then scrapped off the top. The rest if thawed and packaged up.

If you freeze it and don’t remove the water… all you have is frozen beer of the exact same ABV as the thawed.

EDIT:

The salt thing the first person mentioned is for reducing foam in the beer and some how became known as a way to raise the alcohol content. Once again it doesn’t work. You would need to remove water content or add new/more fermentable sugars and re-ferment for a couple weeks to get more alcohol.

In most cases when freezing a beer at home the water will freeze around the alcohol and separating it out will become near impossible. I’m not saying it is impossible… just difficult. You have to closely monitor the temperature of the beer and keep it at 0degC at which point only some of the water will be frozen and most will be insulated against the cold by the alcohol. After you have done this you must then scrap the top layer of ice off.
