Whisky is from Scotland, and whiskey, written with the "e" does not come from Scotland, Ireland, possibly places, but also Japan.
As Champagne is a very specific region of France, and the name is protected by law, the same holds good for whiskey. The only true, real whiskey is in the native soil of distilleries in Scotland many of which are famous around the world.
