Beer Varieties

Canadians do not drink too much of Beer in it?
There are hundreds of different beers available in Canada. However, in some way how it was ordered the same beer over and over again in local bars. An easy top 5 would be:
1. Keith Alexander
2. Labatt Blue
3. Molson Canadian
4. Sleeman Etc
5. Moosehead
An honorable mention would go to Heineken Budweiser and Carling. But do we really know what is happening in the beer industry in Canada? We think it's still the same old blue red vs continuing struggle between Labatt and Molson. However, an interesting publication by Euromonitor says:
With the acquisition of Sleeman in 2006, production Canadian beer is firmly in the hands of foreign multinationals. In late 2006, almost 90% of beer sales was non-domestic producers. This has resulted in a net decline of products made in Canada in the mass market, and a greater emphasis on the outside, global brands such as Stella Artois, Heineken, Budweiser, Coors Light and Brahma. Canadians seem to be well without worrying about the decline of the homegrown beer industry, and has even prompted U.S. Budweiser and Coors Light to the top of the charts. Perhaps as a reaction to this, and because of beneficial legislation, made in Canada have increased beer sales in the premium segment, and although sales are limited, consumers are increasingly able to appreciate local beers and ales.
In this perspective, buyers Canadians are buying beer one beer long (8.4 billion in 2005), but most foreign breweries. Sleeman is alone has a nearly 90% market in Ontario through the LCBO province. Transparent bottles say let the sun shine through. Beer drinkers is obvious love their beer, and to accustom to their favorites, but is also true that variety is the spice of life.
So when was the last time I had a beer? Water the mouth right? Did you know Budweiser is made with a little rice? Maybe we have to give a hand to help our local industry through the acquisition of a small little more knowledge about the origins and variety of beers available. Know your beer. Try local breweries, or make your own beer!
