: A New York City Rudy dive bar with character

He can barely walk a single block in all of New York without running into at the foot of a holy bar. But there is a particular type of place that is near and dear to my heart that people have a variety of names. Some people call them old bars, others may label landfills. Personally, I prefer the more acceptable term dive bar and no one exemplifies this better than (Rudy 627 9th Avenue).

Now there are legitimate rules what means a dive in all such establishments. First, you have to have that cozy shabby appearance that makes you feel like you're having a drink in his uncle's basement. The critical thing here is that the meanness is its authenticity in terms of age and appearance, and usually the joint may not have been established no later than 1974 for this to happen. In fact, the older the better. Any place that tries to make itself look like a dive bar on purpose, and was improvised in recent years is an outright scam and should not be frequented. Secondly, beverages and any food available must be very cheap. Finally, you should avoid any legitimate aim or the appearance of fashion. Sometimes fashion can become inadvertently, but we can not hold that against the bar. It is especially important not change the bar to accommodate the new hip clientele who may try to invade.

Rudy has been a fixture in the kitchen of hell of a time in the neighborhood was truly worthy of the nickname. The area has gentrified since then, but Rudy has remained exactly the same to the torn, red vinyl booths in the form of U. The regular are in their usual places by 12 noon sharp, and will travel for miles to take his seat well earned. Customers here are the cast of characters you expect to live in a set like this.

An elderly couple we knew as regular retirees would trek on the bus almost daily from New Jersey and take his usual place by the front door. We need to chat with them one afternoon and told us they had been married 60 years. I asked the usual question about how one goes about it stands out so much time with another human being. The husband piped up sharply, "You just do not talk to each other more." And the woman did not flinch in the commentary.

There is a small countertop roaster hot dogs in the bar here, and we invite you to take one for free. I confess Rarely have I seen someone eat, however. There is something Links forever turning unappetizing on meat perched on the open bar and no less. Something is not right. After all, nothing is really free in New York. If you feel like you really need to eat something, go right next to Burritoville .

The beer here is really cheap, and Pabst Blue Ribbon can be had for as cheap as a buck when special. Hey, do not tell us that the selection of drinking was going to be fancy, just cheap. Having a variety of hard liquor or beer straight-up is the norm here. You chance to get looked down upon if you try to sort any frozen drink fly, so do not! There was a couple of beers at the house of the years, but I warn you now that there is very good. Palo brand things.

There is a nice outdoor area at the rear of the building if you want to down his pint outside, but I prefer natural darkness that hangs over the roof instead. The decoration Rudy was an afterthought at best, but someone had a sense of humor about it. A massive 6-foot Pink Pig sits directly outside the door making curious customers sign inside.

The top bar is as it should be in a joint dive: dark wood and worn. The old tin ceilings, and is a linoleum floor disappeared from the days when it was actually flaxseed, not vinyl shit today. The staff here is not pretty, but know how to serve a drink right. What else is needed?

Later in the evening after the usual old guard to leave to get home to dinner, college kids and trendoids infiltrate the joint. If you are still around and above 30 years, suddenly feel like the mom room in a fraternity house. Not a good feeling when you can hear their biological clock bar.

No matter who is swollen to Rudy's-bar in a playful college boy, a retired steel worker, or the charming stockbroker, the place will always be one of the dive bars most memorable New York City.
