Ex-pat living in Guangzhou?

I am considering taking a teaching job in Guangzhou next semester and as I come from a small town in Jiangsu (for Chinese standards at least 1 million people). I am a city dweller, I need to go out at night. Are there bars or what the British and Australians call pubs? None of this shit Chinese nightclub (which can be fun after a lot of baijiu), but the real bar you can sit and drink a beer and maybe snooker. They are abundant in Shanghai and Beijing, so I have high hopes for Guangzhou. What foreign food does not, that I love Chinese food, but I miss Thai and Italian. I would be living in the Haizhu (at the University of Business in Guangdong), any information there? What is Lao wai population like? high / low? old / young? and just in general how about this? I have made the Chinese "real" for a year I'm ready for modern China. thanks!

If I were to answer all your questions can be found in the local free rags expatriates around GZ. I posted some links below. GZ Shenzhen and I certainly will offer you a taste of "modern" China, especially in the nightlife and dining scene. Both cities have large communities of expatriates, especially in all multinational (Africans may be the largest expatriate community more cohesive and Guangdong). And their extreme proximity to Hong Kong and Macau becomes a boring weekend ever, and is probably the best part of living in GZ. Have fun!
