Beer Style Guide

There are many different styles of beer, but judging beers are 9 common classes to be reviewed. This article summarizes a of these different kinds of beer.

Class 1: Light Lagers

Light lagers are basically American Light (Budweiser, Coors, Michelob) and Pre-prohibition German pilsner and Bohemia (Bitburger, Pilsner Urquell), Dortmunder Export (Stoudt Oro) and Munich Helles (Spaten Premium).

1A. Lite American Lager

Overall impression: Very light and refreshing.

Comments: A low-calorie beer that the standard international lagers. Is not the strongest flavors. These beers were designed to appeal to mass populations.

Commercial examples: Miller Lite, Bud Light, Coors Light, Amstel Light

1B. American Standard Lager

Comments: No flavors being too strong. The standard is the most popular beer and most mass market.

Commercial examples: Miller High Life, Budweiser, Kirin Lager, Molson Golden, Corona Extra, Foster's Lager

1C. Premium American Lager

Overall impression: Over filling the lite versions. However, a very light beer. Refreshing.

Comments: More stadard flavor / lite lager, but not strong flavors present in beer. Again, another mass-market beer, but much heavier than the others mentioned. The imports in bottle green are included here as Heineken, for example.

Commercial examples: Miller Genuine Draft, Michelob, Coors Extra Gold, Heineken, Beck's, Stella Artois, Singha

1D. Munich Helles

Overall impression: malta, but completely attenuated.

History: Founded in Munich in 1895 at the brewery By Gabriel Sedlmayr Spaten. This beer was designed to compete directly with the Pilsner beer style always popular.

Comments: This beer is focused on malt flavor with some bitterness of hops, which is much unlike the Pilsner style.

Commercial Examples: Hacker-Pschorr MĚšnchner Helles, Paulaner Lager Premium, Spaten Premium Lager, Andechser hell Lagerbier Augustiner Hell, Weihenstephaner Original, Stoudt's Gold Lager

1E. Dortmunder Export

Very well balanced beer, copper-colored. profile of a Helles Munich jump, jumped like a pilsner, but tends to be a little stronger than them.

History: Born in the industrial region Dortmund, Dortmund has been losing its popularity dramatically in the region.
